The Theory of Everything #film #movie #music

I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan. He’s the guy that made such great movies as Rushmore, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizou, the Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom. I’m not a fan of the Oscars, seeing it as a one big political mess. Nevertheless, when Anderson finally got the recognition he deserved with the Grand Budapest Hotel, I couldn’t help but watch the Oscars hoping this fantastic cast, crew, and Anderson himself would sweep them. I was disappointed when, among others, the best actor Oscar didn’t go to Ralph Fiennes.

Now I’m angry that the Theory of Everything didn’t sweep. Eddie Redmayne was incredible as Stephen Hawking. He reminded me of Kevin Spacey in the final scene of K-Pax. Spacey’s character was unable to communicate with others due to his mental condition, yet Spacey, acting his ass off as always, gave a single facial expression that conveyed about a page of dialog by itself. Redmayne’s task was similar, and he pulled it off remarkably.

If you haven’t yet seen the movie, do so. For now, enjoy some music from the film.

This Day in History, @NASA Created #space #science #NASA

Per Wikipedia, image is public domain.

This day in history, July 29, 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is created. Contrary to what articles like this one tell you, the real reason for its creation can be seen in this short, educational video:

Pentaquark Particles Discovered At The Large Hadron Collider #science #physics #patent

Pluto

“What have you done for me lately, Pluto?” “Talk to me in about 12 hours, jerk.”

The thing about science is that, at this point, changes occur seemingly constantly. Two hours ago, I posted about Pluto. While we’re waiting for information (head to New Scientists’s live blog here), another major discovery hits my stream. It seems that scientists at the Large Hadron Collider have confirmed the existence of a new form of matter consisting of five quarks. I doubt this will affect your lives directly, but when the next best thing in air travel, computing, or microwave ovens hits your local electronics store, you’ll be glad they made this discovery.

So will the patent lawyers.

Pluto

Not as boring as you might think.

The New Horizons probe passed by Pluto at about 14 km/s (~8.7 m/s) at a distance of 12,500 km (about 7,800 miles, which is 1/3 the distance between the Earth and the Moon). NASA’s next round of data collection will occur sometime after midnight tonight, which will include the highest resolution photos of the planet to date. This is an exciting time for astronomy. My undergraduate degree is in Physics, and I can’t help but feel a bit left behind, but I’m happy for all the advances humanity is making, as well as the knowledge we’re gathering about the universe.

The two most frightening words in Washington are ‘bipartisan consensus.’ Bipartisan consensus is when my doctor and my lawyer agree with my wife that I need help.

Another Leap Forward for Nerdkind #technology #engineering

An early prototype?

I can’t count the number of articles I’ve read referring to jet packs as an unrealistic technology, and unnecessarily dangerous even in the event that someone actually created it. Well, Martin Aircraft Company just announced their arrival as soon as next year, with emergency services providers (among others) representing a realistic target audience. If you have about $150,000.00 spare cash lying around, you can get one too.
