The Theory of Everything #film #movie #music

I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan. He’s the guy that made such great movies as Rushmore, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizou, the Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom. I’m not a fan of the Oscars, seeing it as a one big political mess. Nevertheless, when Anderson finally got the recognition he deserved with the Grand Budapest Hotel, I couldn’t help but watch the Oscars hoping this fantastic cast, crew, and Anderson himself would sweep them. I was disappointed when, among others, the best actor Oscar didn’t go to Ralph Fiennes.

Now I’m angry that the Theory of Everything didn’t sweep. Eddie Redmayne was incredible as Stephen Hawking. He reminded me of Kevin Spacey in the final scene of K-Pax. Spacey’s character was unable to communicate with others due to his mental condition, yet Spacey, acting his ass off as always, gave a single facial expression that conveyed about a page of dialog by itself. Redmayne’s task was similar, and he pulled it off remarkably.

If you haven’t yet seen the movie, do so. For now, enjoy some music from the film.

Reporter and Photographer Killed on Air This Morning #crime #media

Wow. There’s no “blood and guts” in the video, but you’ll get the gist of what happened.

This morning in Franklin County, Virginia, a news reporter and her photographer were killed live on the air. The video is here (though I’m not sure how long it will stay up):

One report on the story is here. Another report on the story is here. As of this moment, the identity of the shooter is unknown. If you’re in the area and know something, let the police know.

Hey, Hey We’re the Lawyers! #law #ip #realestate #music

People recognize intellectual property the same way they recognize real estate. People understand what property is. But it’s a new kind of property, and so the understanding uses new control surfaces. It uses a new way of defining the property.

Chris Squire, Bassist for the band Yes, Dead at 67 #music #rip #yes

Picture from press release on Yesworld.com, the Yes official websiteAnother week, another death in the art world that strikes a chord.

Over the weekend, Chris Squire, bass player for the legendary band Yes, died. As a dopey teenager in the 80s, I was greatly influenced by Squire, especially his work on Yes’s 1971 album, Fragile. I wasn’t the only one. Squire was recognized by his peers as one of the best rock bassists ever to pluck a string. If you listen to rock music, and you think you don’t know his work, you’re greatly mistaken. His influence over the genre is undeniable.

Sadly, Yes remains one of the notable snubs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Perhaps this year Squire and his band-mates will get their due.

James Horner, Oscar-Winning Composer, Dead at 61 #music #movie #rip

James Horner

R.I.P., James Horner

At my age, I’ve come to expect personalities important to my childhood to disappear. One of those personalities just passed away. Among many others, Horner wrote the soundtracks for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1983), which were two of my favorite movies as a teenager (Wrath of Khan is still one of my favorites). Additionally, while I was much older when Braveheart and the Devil’s Own came out, I still listen to that music today. If you want to see his full list of credits, you’ll have to Google him. The list is just too long to post here. I’m sure you all have your favorites, even if you don’t realize it.

Perhaps I Should Have Saved This for #Caturday

Crumbs & Whiskers just opened up in Georgetown (a part of Washington, DC). It’s a cat cafe. Yeah, just come on by and pet a strange cat. (Don’t knock it; petting cats reduces stress.) A “normal” cafe across the street will deliver food and coffee, though I’m not sure I’d order coffee. My last cat would jump all over me trying to get my Starbucks Mocha from me. It costs $10/hour ($12/hour on the weekend) to pet cats you don’t own, and you have to set a reservation at the cafe’s website. Leave children under 13 at home; they aren’t allowed.
